Chapter 18

THE COOL, DARK room had a mustiness I'd always associated with old buildings. As my eyes adjusted to the light, the furnishings of a monk's living quarters came into view: a single cot rested against one end of the room, a crucifix on the wall above it. A small side table stood by the bed, holding a well-worn missal and lamp. An arched doorway stood on the other side of the room and I ran to it, praying it wasn't locked. Prayer seemed appropriate, considering.

As I reached for the handle excited voices from outside filtered through the broken window. The thumb latch gave with a click and I yanked the door open and raced through, closing it quickly behind me.

I found myself in a long hallway flanked by more arched doorways with all them closed. A larger one graced the far end of the hall and looked like my best bet. I sprinted to it and pushed it open, squinting at the sunlight flooding through a bank of clerestory windows. From the stained glass, it looked like I was in the transept of the cathedral. The cavernous nave stretched in front of me with the main entrance to my right. I peered around the corner to see several groups of frightened people sitting huddled together on benches, speaking in hushed tones. Most looked like tourists, although a few appeared to be local.

The massive front door to the church opened and several local police spilled through the entrance. I turned away so they wouldn't see my face and sat next to one of the groups on a bench near the middle. A large brimmed hat lay on the pew beside me. An older woman who I assumed to be the owner was fanning herself and speaking in a low voice to two other women, her back to me. I made sure she was turned away as I eased the hat onto my lap and moved to another pew.

“Everyone must leave the church immediately,” one of the policemen commanded in both English and Spanish. “The gunmen have been apprehended. It is now safe to go.”

Excited voices in several different languages echoed through the cavernous room as people rose from their seats and milled toward the front door. I used the resulting confusion to slip on the hat. One of the policemen had stationed himself at the door and was searching everyone's faces, obviously looking for someone. A pair of sunglasses peeked out from the pocket of a woman's purse near me. As I was about to close my fingers around them, she turned. I snapped my hand back and looked the other way. I could feel her eyes on me for a few tense moments before she turned to the front. I moved closer and kept my head down. This time the sunglasses ended up in my pocket.

I allowed a few more people in the crowd to fill the space behind her, then slid the glasses on as soon as she moved out of range.
